Dreams from the Sea
Heros Square
Grand Cayman Islands
2015

Heroes Square is also known as Quincentennial Square. It is in the center of George Town and a must see for all visitors. The celebration of the 500th anniversary of Cayman in 2003 has seen quite a few changes in this square. The many sculptures and monuments provide a view to the history of the Island. The central feature of the park is a fountain, which is supposed to represent the sea. There are three monuments at the Fort Street section of the park. The first is a statue of Cayman's first National Hero, Jim Bodden. The next is titled, 'Aspiration' and is a sculpture of a young lady with globe in hand walking up steps, and an elderly lady handing her a slip of paper. The sculpture has 'steps to equality' on the side, and represents the stand that 24 women took in the 1948 election to have women voting rights.

In this same area of the park, but not visible from the Street, is the Mariners Memorial and the 'Tradition' sculpture. The Mariners memorial, lists war & merchant ships (2 plaques), rangers & unknown ships and schooners that resulted in the loss of life on Cayman shores. The individuals are also listed with the years of their death. An older Mariners memorial is to the left of the Fort George ruins. The Tradition sculpture was my favourite here, and showed two men seemingly searching for survivors at sea. One of the men was steering the boat and the other viewing the sea through a scope. This is a Simon Morris sculpture.

On the Edward Street section of the park, is a monument of a 'cat boat' titled 'Dreams from the sea'. The Catboat has been used from 1904- present for catching turtles at sea, fishing, transporting goods to market, etc. The sculptor is Karoly Szucs. The final monument in the park is located in front of the courthouse, and is known as the 'Wall of Honour'. It lists persons who contributed to the development of the country. A short stroll on nearby Albert Panton Street, leads to a black tiled mural on the wall adjacent to the Court House. This mural is known as the 'Wall of History'. It highlights important events in the history of Cayman, and was done by a local artist, John Broad.

Other nearby attractions include the Fort George Ruins, Elsmlie Church, Centennial Park, Clock tower and Constitution House.
