Fontana dei Leoni
Fountain of the Four Lions
Rome Italy
2016

Piazza del Popolo is home to several fountains.

At the base of the ancient Egyptian obelisk, which graces the centre of the piazza, stands the Fontana dei Quattro Leoni (Fountain of the Four Lions), 1828, which was designed by the Roman architect Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1830). The fountain actually takes the form of four mini-fountains, each comprising a marble lion sitting on a stepped plinth.

On the west side of the piazza is the Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune), 1818-21, and on the east the Fontana della Dea di Roma (Fountain of the Goddess of Rome), 1818-21, both the work of the Roman sculptor Giovanni Ceccarini (c.1790-1861).

Santa Maria in Montesanto is a church of Rome, in the Rione Campo Marzio, which stands in Piazza del Popolo, between Via del Corso and Via del Babuino. It is also known as the Church of the Artists. The church is popularly known as the twin church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, though it shows significant differences especially in the planimetry.

Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria di Montesanto are two churches in Rome. They are located on the Piazza del Popolo, facing the northern gate of the Aurelian Walls, at the entrance of Via del Corso on the square.

Santa Maria in Montesanto is one of the twin 17th century churches on the Piazza del Popolo, the other being Santa Maria dei Miracoli (they are often treated together in the literature). The address of this one is Via del Babuino 197, and the rione is Campo Marzio.

Unlike its twin, this church is a minor basilica and is also Rome's "Church of the Artists".

The dedication is to the Blessed Virgin Mary, originally under her title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel but lately under that of Our Lady, Queen of Heaven.

Piazza del Popolo is a large urban square in Rome. The name in modern Italian literally means "People's Square", but historically it derives from the poplars after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name.

Piazza del Popolo is one of the most famous and most beautiful squares in Rome. It is a large elliptical space designed by architect Valadier, with several interesting churches, an impressive obelisk, three fountains and the old and impressive city gate into Rome: Porta del Popolo.
