The tradition of decorating the outside of a house for Christmas primarily took off in the mid-20th century with the increased availability of electricity, allowing people to hang electric lights outdoors, and gained further momentum with the post-war housing boom, where neighborhoods began decorating their homes with lights to create a festive community atmosphere; before this, outdoor Christmas decorations were largely limited to candles in windows as a symbol of welcome to travelers.

With the development of safer and more accessible electric lights, the practice of decorating homes with outdoor lights became more common, particularly in the 1950s.

The post-war era saw the emergence of neighborhood-wide Christmas light displays, often with a competitive spirit, as people aimed to have the most impressive decorations.
