Florence will host its third annual Children’s Festival and transform once again into a city full of wonder and discovery, with events and workshops at various locations.

There is something for both kids and the kid at heart at the Festival dei Bambini. Some events incorporate science experiments and lab activities to produce fun – and delicious – results. In Ice Lab: The Science of Ice Cream, families will learn the secrets behind the science of ice cream, perform an experiment, and eat the gelato they make. This cool lab is offered at the Le Murate complex in Piazza delle Murate on all three days of the festival nearly every hour for 45 minutes starting at 9 am.

Others offer a chance to learn while creating bonds that last. The Fiorentina Canine Academy invites 7 – 13 year olds to play with dogs while learning about the responsibilities that come with the decision to adopt a Forever Friend. Assistants will be on hand to help children learn and develop the skills necessary to have happy, fun interactions with them. This workshop will be held on April 17 from 3:30 pm to 6 pm at the Canine Academy headquarters on Via del Poderaccio.

Many interactive activities are featured for adolescents and children. For the budding chef, there is the Baby Chef Demo Course at the Biblioteca delle Oblate (Via Dell’Oriuolo, 26). This demonstration for 4-11 year olds is just a taste of the “Baby Chef” course that will be offered in the library’s café from April until June. The kids will be able to learn how to identify ingredients and follow a recipe while having fun. The presence of a parent is strongly recommended for this activity. The course is offered on Friday at 3 pm and on Sunday at 10 am. Reservations: email [email protected] with the subject “Prenotazione Posto Demo Baby Chef.”

For the aspiring fashion star, Biblioteca delle Oblate will offer Matter of Style for 11 – 13 year olds on Saturday at 5 pm. They will step into the shoes of famous designers to create their own unique fashion styles using recycled materials. Each participant can take their “signature collection” home to show friends and family. Matter of Style emphasizes the importance of recycling by using creativity to create something new from the old. Make a reservation by calling. 355 – 5698131 or email [email protected].

There are also a few activities for those who wish to relax after a fun-filled day. Fosso Bandito invites children and parents to Cascine Park to work with tissue paper, bamboo sticks, and crepe paper to build and fly their own kites in Playing With the Wind, offered daily during the festival at 4 pm.

On Friday at 5 pm, The Harold Acton Library at the British Institute will host an animated reading of the book Sweet Dreams, Honey Bear and a screening of “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree” for 4 – 6 year olds, complete with afternoon tea.

Florence, capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria dell'Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”
