Home Farm Store In Middleburg, VA: The Perfect Country Market In The Perfect Country Town

Middleburg, Virginia is the quintessential, manicured country town, a collection of quaint stone and brick houses surrounded by rolling fields of horse farms and white picket fences an hour’s drive from Washington D.C. It has a Colonial air, founded in 1787, and a fairly constant population of 600 residents who fiercely protect its historic, low-development charm. During the Kennedy administration, Jacqueline Kennedy would come out to ride here, staying at the Red Fox Inn. Today, another, rather infamous name attached to a Presidential stint, Monica Lewinsky confidante Linda Tripp, operates the knick knack store The Christmas Sleigh. But nearby, entrepreneur Sandy Lerner, co-founder of Cisco Systems and creator of Urban Decay cosmetics owns the Home Farm Store, both a delicious place to shop and a political bastion of sustainable, organic, humanely produced, non-genetically modified food.

On display in the former bank with its sharp black and white striped walls are the meats produced by Lerner's Ayrshire Farm, a leading producer of naturally fed, humanely raised livestock, cheese from around the world, American charcuterie, Virginia ciders, wines, craft beers, ice cream produced by an Amish dairy in Pennsylvania, cakes and in the freezer, raw organic food for cats and dogs that the farm produces under the name “The Furry Foodie.” Upstairs, in a former classroom, is a small café for sandwiches and ice cream. But even better is Lerner’s restaurant in nearby Upperville called The Hunter’s Head Tavern. In a turnaround from the fox hunting so popular on these fields, the logo is a fox carrying a covered dish. One can easily guess what is inside.

Middleburg was established in 1787 by American Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel and Virginia statesman John Leven Powell, who purchased the property from Joseph Chinn, a cousin of George Washington. Powell changed the name from “Chinn’s Crossroads” to Middleburg because the town was the halfway point between Alexandria and Winchester along the popular Ashby Gap trading route, along what is today Rte. 50.
