Via della Pelliccia
Trastevere
Rome Italy
2016

Via della Pelliccia is a street in the Trastevere district between Piazza di Sant'Egidio and Via del Moro .

The road is divided into two parts by Piazza de' Renzi , and the short one of the two, as indicated by Lanciani's map, had in the past the name of Via del Macelletto, although it is possible that the whole road bore this name.

In 1803 a Pelliccia family - or, according to others, "De Pelliciis" - owned a house in the nearby Via del Cipresso, and from this property this road also took the name of Via della Pelliccia, and was probably also called with the plural "Via delle Fur coats".

However, the hypotheses according to which the road takes its name from a furrier's shop or from the sign of a tavern are not ruled out.

In 1872 the section then called Via del Macelletto was also annexed to the road to avoid having the same name with another road, which has now disappeared due to the construction of the Lungotevere, which was located in the Rione Ponte.

Colorful Trastevere is a funky, bohemian area that clings to its centuries-old, working-class roots. It's known for traditional and innovative trattorias, craft beer pubs and artisan shops, as well as simple B&Bs and budget hotels. From the pre-dinner passeggiata (promenade) until late, a young crowd buzzes around Piazza di San Calisto and Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the site of a gilded, mosaic-filled church.
