The history of Christmas wreaths can be traced back to ancient civilizations, and includes the use of wreaths in ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The tradition of the Advent wreath originated in 16th century Germany, and spread to other parts of Europe and the United States.
Circle: The circle represents eternity, unity, and wholeness
Evergreens: The color of evergreens throughout the year symbolizes eternal life
Candles: Candles in Advent wreaths represent the Christian values of hope, peace, love, and joy
As Christianity spread through Europe, many pagan traditions were assimilated and given new Christian meanings. The Christmas wreath became one such symbol. Christians began to use evergreen wreaths as a sign of everlasting life, with the circular shape representing God, with no beginning and no end.
Later adopted by the Christian faith, wreaths are used to observe the Advent season. Hung on the door or a window, the wreath has been viewed as an invitation to the spirit of Christmas to enter the home and bring luck, suggesting as well that the Christmas spirit dwells within.
The current Hotel Bethlehem site was the location of both the First House of Bethlehem in 1741 and the Golden Eagle Hotel, built by the Moravians and opened in 1823. The Moravians are a traditionally hospitable community and provided lodging for distinguished patriots and military leaders during the Revolutionary War.
