Route 66, also known as the “Mother Road,” was a significant part of American history and pop culture.
The Bureau of Public Roads established Route 66 in 1926 as part of the first Federal highway system. The road was a combination of existing local, state, and national roads. Cyrus Avery, a realtor and coal company owner from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is known as "The Father of Route 66".
Route 66 was a popular route due to the U.S. 66 Highway Association's promotion of it as the "shortest, best and most scenic route". It was also a key route for westward expansion and discovery during the 1900s.
Route 66 was featured in the 1946 song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the CBS television series Route 66 from 1960 to 1964. It was also a part of everyday life for Americans, who encountered it in books, advertisements, and on television.
In the 1950s, the Federal Highway System began constructing new, more direct highways that bypassed many small towns and attractions along Route 66. By the 1970s, Route 66 was no longer a primary transportation route. It was officially decommissioned in 1985.
The National Park Service has designated many sections of Route 66 as National Scenic Byways or historic districts to ensure their preservation.
