These pelicans are a common sight in Key West, especially during the winter. They are known for their large wingspan, aerobatic dives, and comfort around humans. Brown pelicans were once threatened by pesticides in the 1970s, but are now abundant.


Both the Brown and White Pelican can be found in Key West. The adult Brown Pelican has a light head and gray-brown feathers on the body while the immature pelican is dull above and light below. A strong flier, it flies with its head tucked back into its shoulders.
