Chapel of the Baptistery (Carlo Fontana)

The Chapel of the Baptistery was designed by Carlo Fontana (1638-1714). The altarpiece, which depicts the Baptism of Christ (1722), is a copy of a painting by Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) that hangs in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The gilded bronze cover of the font rests on a porphyry basin.

St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church in the world. It stands above the spot where St Peter is thought to have been buried. The basilica is the second church to have been erected here; the first was built by Emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337) between 324 and 329.
